Professional organizations are now adopting Hawk-Eye technology across many different sports to improve the fan experience, enhance the safety of the player, and make quick, intuitive decisions.
FERMONT, CA: Hawk-Eye technology uses 6-7 high-end cameras above the playing field to track the movement and trajectory of an object used in sports competition. This technology minimizes players' and spectators' criticism of the match referee's decision. By analyzing the balls' motion through this technology, when the game is going on, the umpire can quickly make an error-free decision. Here are a few applications of this technology.
Soccer – Goal-Line Application
The Hawk-Eye device uses a series of cameras to monitor the ball, alerting the referee if the ball has crossed the line through a signal on their watch. No alert means no goal, and with minimal delay, the match will continue. While the results are impressive, implementation is an expensive system; it means that stadiums only have the technology installed at the higher levels of the game, leaving many smaller clubs to manage without implementing the technology during the game.
Tennis – Hawkeye & Net Sensors
Hawk-Eye was synonymous with tennis before it was embraced by soccer and has been used in professional events since 2002. A set of 10 cameras around the court monitor the ball's movement and give players the chance to challenge the decision-makers' call on whether a shot landed in or out of the court. The system is accurate to 5 mm but is widely accepted as a definitive system. The net cord sensor is a less complex but equally useful piece of tennis tech which senses vibrations in the net, alerting umpires to suggest any during service.
Decision-Making in Cricket
For a long time, T20 cricket was the place to test technologies and helped to make the game more fun, from jerseys to blinking stumps and bails. It can be incredibly hard for umpires to judge the game in real-time for making critical decisions, so using a simple LED system makes it easier for players, officials, and fans as well.
Technology has taken over the modern world of today. Many professional and amateur sports bodies are embracing new technologies with certain gears and gadgets to protect sporting rules, ethics, and make it easier for games to be definitive.
