Netflix, Amazon, and other on-demand media providers have revolutionized the cinema experience over the last twenty years. This coupled with the increasingly sophisticated technology of televisions offering 4K resolution (many cinema screens still only offer 2K), means cinema theatres constantly have to work harder to incorporate new and diverse technologies in order to provide an impressive all-around experience, from the screen to the seating.
Fremont, CA: Movies differ from the home theatre in several ways - they are, first and foremost, events and outings that require leaving the house. Any cinema trip would not be complete without a good movie. However, it forms only part of the overall experience, as the technology and hospitality offered must attract cinemagoers and make them feel connected to the film.
Experiential Innovations
Cinema is now incorporating a wide range of new and diverse technologies thanks to cutting-edge technology and the digitization of the cinema. Theatres equipped with IMAX, Dolby Cinema, MX4D, and Screen X offer a higher quality picture, enhanced realism, and pristine audio customized for the best experience. As part of the theatre experience, there are several factors to consider, including screen size, resolution, audio system, lighting, and of course, the in-house style and comfort – the quality of the seats as well as any other hospitality services available.
Augmented reality on the rise
An augmented reality experience is an interactive simulation of a real-world environment. Through the use of multi-sensory modalities such as sight, sound, touch, smell, and touch, virtual reality replaces the real world with a stimulating one. With the introduction of 4DX cinema theatres, products like Buttkicker and D-box have been incorporated into the cinema experience.
Screens that are superior
While 4DX cinema experiences may not be for everyone, high-quality screen resolution, screen size, and available lighting influence the viewer's perception of the cinema experience. In the future, new technologies such as Screen X theatres will offer a 270° viewing experience, and the use of side walls will allow for the expansion of traditional cinemas. Screen X uses 5 projectors, 1 for the main screen and the remaining 4 for the side walls, compared to a normal cinema which uses 1 projector and one front screen. A state-of-the-art sound system and sophisticated software combine to create a fully immersive experience that seamlessly blends these images.
