New Technologies Enhancing the Cinema Experience

Media Entertainment Tech Outlook | Saturday, March 19, 2022

Over the past two decades, the cinematic experience has evolved significantly, with Netflix, Amazon, and other on-demand media providers revolutionizing the film industry's economy.

Fremont, CA: In contrast to home theater, a trip to the cinema is first and foremost an event, an adventure that requires leaving the house. Undoubtedly, the film's quality itself is of the utmost significance during a visit to the cinema, but the technology and hospitality on offer must also entice and link moviegoers to the movie they are viewing.

Innovative experience

Modern technology and the digitization of the cinema have resulted in incorporating a vast array of new and different technologies into the cinematic experience. Premium movie theatres, such as IMAX, Dolby Cinema, MX4D theatres, and Screen X equipped cinemas, provide a higher quality image, enhanced realism, and pristine audio systems customized for an optimal viewing experience. This covers the size and resolution of the screen, the audio system, the lighting, as well as the aesthetic and comfort of the theater itself.

Rise of augmented reality

The term augmented reality refers to an interactive experience of the real world. Virtual reality substitutes the real world with one that is stimulated by the use of multi-sensory modalities such as sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste, all of which affect the viewer's experience. With the debut of 4DX cinema theatres — a motion picture technology offering multiple 3D effects – products such as Buttkicker and D-box have been integrated into the cinema experience. 4DX refers to a multi-sensory experience that engages the five aforementioned senses, adding a variety of motion and environmental effects such as moving chairs, scented air, strobes, and smoke, among others, that allow viewers to "feel" the action from the built-in motion and effects.

Superior screens

Although the 4DX cinema experience may not be for everyone, screen resolution, screen size, and available lighting appear to have a significant impact on the viewer's perception of the cinema experience's quality. New technologies such as Screen X theaters offer groundbreaking new cinema technology, enabling a 270° viewing experience that involves the usage of sidewalls,

allowing for the expansion of the typical movie theater. Screen X, on the other hand, employs a total of five projectors, one for the main screen and four for the side walls. A typical theater uses a single projector to illuminate a single front screen. Together with a state-of-the-art sound system, sophisticated software combines these images in such a way that the action appears to spread beyond the screen, creating a totally immersive experience.
