With the advent of the internet, computers, and the miniaturization of technology, the future of filmmaking may be far removed from the bulky camera equipment and sound stages we are accustomed to.
FREMONT, CA: The ability to film and upload video with a phone has already had a significant impact on film by allowing anyone to create their independent projects with little overhead or technical knowledge. Now, advancements and equipment designed specifically for phone-based filmmaking may further democratize film by allowing phone users to get the same experience as film professionals.
Digital Re-Creation
The ability to digitally re-create faces, bodies and even dialogue is advancing rapidly. Digital effects technology has advanced to the point where it is now possible to create a stunningly lifelike facsimile of almost anyone. While this capability represents a significant technological advancement for film and stage performances, it raises many moral and ethical concerns.
Virtual Reality
While current 3D technology allows for a more immersive and exciting film experience, virtual reality is poised to be the wave of the future of film. With new projects like Two Eyes VR, we can create a finished product that uses full 360° recording to allow us to watch films in the same way we see the natural world.

Drones
An algorithm may soon be responsible for award-winning cinematography. Drones are already capable of capturing shots that would be difficult, if not impossible, for a traditional cameraman to obtain. For example, consider a drone's mobility combined with an algorithm to avoid obstacles and employ various filming techniques autonomously.
Video Editing Using Algorithms
Digital editing is one of the most time-consuming but crucial aspects of creating a polished, finished film. MIT researchers are currently working on ways to automate and streamline the process. Facial recognition technology has advanced by leaps and bounds in just a few years. Still, computers may soon be able to follow scripts, automatically label every clip, and apply jump cuts and other editing techniques.
In the past, green screens, animation, and camera stabilization allowed filmmakers to bring their creations to life in ways that their forefathers could only dream of. Modern advancements are primarily aimed at streamlining the editing process and increasing the availability of filmmaking technology. To create a polished finished product, would-be filmmakers will no longer need access to a studio and hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment, nor will they have to spend hours dealing with tedious editing.
